Relines and Rebase
Denture reline and rebase are procedures used to improve the fit and comfort of dentures. Here's the distinction between the two:
Denture Reline:
- Purpose: Adjusts the fit of an existing denture by reshaping the side that rests on the gums.
- Procedure: A new layer of material is added to the underside of the denture (the part that contacts the soft tissue) to improve its fit.
- When Needed: Relining is typically done when the shape of the gums or jawbone has changed over time, causing the denture to become loose or uncomfortable.
- Types:
- Soft reline: A flexible, cushiony material is used for added comfort.
- Hard reline: A more durable, rigid material is applied.
Denture Rebase:
- Purpose: Replaces the entire base of the denture while keeping the existing teeth intact.
- Procedure: The original denture teeth are preserved, but the entire acrylic base is replaced with new material.
- When Needed: Rebase is typically performed when the denture base becomes significantly worn, cracked, or weakened, or if a complete overhaul is needed due to damage or age.
Both procedures improve the fit, comfort, and functionality of the denture, extending its lifespan and allowing the patient to continue using it comfortably.
